What is an Oxymel? Well, its a very simple form of old fashioned medicine combining vinegar and honey.

With the combination of infused vinegar and honey you have a vitamin, mineral and constituent rich brew. Vinegars should be infused ahead of time for maximum efficacy but this is not necessary! Honey has its own medicinal benefits but does not extract as well so it is best to add it after the herb has been infused in the vinegar. However, if this is not possible than you want to add the vinegar first and the honey second. If you add the honey first it will coat the veggies or plant material making it harder for the vinegar to extract their goodness.

Medicinally, the combination of vinegar and honey is useful in supporting the immune system, soothing a sore throat or calming so once you add in herbs for additional support you have created an effective & tasty preparation. Hyssop & Bee Balm make delicious oxymels that are great support when you have a cold or the flu especially when its accompanied by a sore throat and/or coughing. You could also add in some Sage or Thyme for additional medicinal benefit.

Oxymels are great as salad dressings, sauce for roasted veggies or stir-fry’s and can also be added to carbonated water for a refreshing, sparkling beverage!

One of my favorite oxymel combinations is turmeric and ginger. Turmeric is a great health tonic that benefits the whole body in so many ways. It is has amazing anti-inflammatory properties, supports healthy digestion and helps to protect and rejuvenate the liver. Ginger is also an anti-inflammatory and may provide relief from pain and swelling caused by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Ginger helps to ease digestive discomfort and nausea. It is also loaded with antioxidants that can help prevent stress and damage to your body’s DNA. They may help your body fight off chronic diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease, and diseases of the lungs, plus promote healthy aging. This is a delightful food/medicine for spring-time wellness and throughout the year!

You can use fresh or dried turmeric to make this delicious oxymel. I suppose you could use dried ginger too but I recommend fresh. You will also be adding in a little cracked black pepper to aid the absorption of the curcumin (the constituent of turmeric that has so many benefits).
